Curators: Violeta Janeiro y Angustias Freijo

Artists: Leonora Carrington (UK-MX), Concha Jerez (ES), Elena Asins (ES), Maribel Domènech (ES), Ángela García Codoñer (ES), Marisa González (ES), Pilar Lara (ES), Rocio Garriga (ES), Gina Arizpe (MX), Ángela Bonadies (VE), Raquel Manchado (ES), Adriana Marmorek (CO), Elena Tejada-Herrera (PE).

This exhibition proposes a dialogue with the exhibition presented by Freijo Gallery at its booth at the 42nd edition of ARCO MADRID 2023, curated by Violeta Janeiro and featuring the work of five Spanish artists. Inspired by Leonora Carrington's experience in Spain, collected in her book "Memorias desde abajo" (Memories from Below).

The project presented at ARCO is articulated around a generation of women artists born in the atmosphere described in the book, a generation that produced their work through the arts without a theoretical or referential framework to support them. On this basis, the curators have developed an expanded project in Freijo Gallery of multidisciplinary and international participation of women artists of different generations with works from different periods.

The starting point for this selection was an unpublished work by Leonora Carrington, which has recently participated in the VIII Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo Fundación ONCE. The exhibition features 13 artists, 3 of them deceased, 10 represented by Freijo Gallery, from different generations from Europe and Latin America. Works in different media (photography, painting, installation, video and sculpture) from the 20th and 21st centuries are on display.
